As concrete expressions of the aspiration to global harmony and order the United Nations headquarters in New York and Geneva are instances of superlative design. In the photographs Oddy made in these twin seats of world government he sought to isolate and accentuate some of their most salient features. Here we see the translator booths in the General Assembly, whose protocol demands that speeches must never be amplified, but rather must pass through microphones and circuits before being relayed into the delegates’ earpieces in one or other of the languages of the great powers.
