Sound Synthesis Archive is a music and visual art collective that explores the relationships between the rich legacies of the underground music of the past & present and their related visual cultures.

This inaugural release is a collaboration between Ben Lancaster (electronics, programming & arrangement) featuring Sean Roche on tenor and soprano saxophone with visual artist Justin Hibbs who has created two unique artwork editions for the front and reverse covers.

For the limited release of 300 10inches comprises 150 Risoprint printed sets (this one) and an exclusive second set of 150 limited edition unique Art Edition prints - both front and back covers being a completely unique numbered edition woodcut prints, a contemporary take on a traditional process reflecting the musical reference points of the release.

Sound synthesis Archives intention is to create a package that people would value both musically and as a visual artefact acknowledging the historical legacies of DIY musical productions alongside the associated visual cultures of those productions.

The release is to some extent a homage to the historical legacies of the whole DIY approach to vinyl production, from Sun Ra’s Saturn label, with the hand drawn covers to all the associated community led labels of the 60’s & 70’s (i.e. Steve Reid’s Mustevic) through to the more contemporary reference points such as Punk, electronic music and Dub. Both sides utilise the same arrangement with the A-side, Hidden Future, featuring tenor and soprano saxophone from Sean Roche and the B-side, Reverse Synthesis, featuring an alternative eastern vibe with Ben playing the Moog over the backing track.

Ben Lancaster has been arranging and recording music for more than 20 years and continues to build his studio with an emphasis on electronics, particularly modular synthesis.
Justin Hibbs is a contemporary Artist and DJ who has exhibited his work nationally & internationally. He collaborated previously with Ben Lancaster on the exhibition Alias Recovered (Carroll/Fletcher gallery 2015) where they created a surround sound installation to accompany a suite of paintings based around the idea of compositional exchanges between painting and electronic music.
